Apply for a FlexStudent current account

To apply for FlexStudent

You need to:


  • be 18 or over
  • be a UK resident
  • not have a student account with another provider (though you can switch it to Nationwide)
  • have been accepted onto a full-time UCAS course of at least 2 years, in the UK
  • have an unconditional offer (if you have a conditional offer, you’ll need to wait until your place has been confirmed)
  • apply no more than 5 months before your course start date or within 2 months of your course starting. But if you’ve had a savings, mortgage or current account with us for 12 months or more, then you can apply up to 18 months after your course starts.

If you’ve had a savings, mortgage or current account with us for 12 months or more, you can apply up to 18 months after your course starts. You’ll have to apply in branch or over the phone.

Fees, charges and important documents

When you open a current account with us, we need to let you know about our most recent summary financial statement and auditors' report. These are published on our website. The summary financial statement shows a summary of our accounts, you can access it by navigating to the 'Summary Financial Statement' page in our Review of the Year. You can also view our Review of the Year and latest full annual report and accounts, which contains our auditors' report, by navigating to our 'Results and Accounts' page and selecting the relevant year.


Apply for FlexStudent

To open your account, you will need:


  • your address history for the past three years
  • your employer’s address (if you’re employed)
  • a valid UK passport or a full UK driving licence
  • your UCAS 4 digit Status Code. You’ll get your Status Code after you’ve accepted an unconditional offer or met your conditions. Find it in the top right hand corner of any communication from UCAS
  • your course and institution details.

If you don’t have a passport or a driving licence, we may need you to come in to branch with your ID. We’ll need to see proof of your name and your address.

Switch to FlexStudent

When you switch, we can transfer your payments and close your old account. You pick the date, and we’ll do the rest.

You’ll need all the same information you would for applying, as well as:


  • the name of your existing bank or building society
  • your account number and sort code
  • the long number from your debit card.

We may need you to come to branch with your ID. If you apply online, we’ll let you know at the end of the application.
