Closing your account when living abroad

Registering for internet banking is the quickest way to close your current account - If you do not have internet banking, or cannot access it, there may be further options available.

If you want to send your money to your account abroad you’ll need to use either use either SEPA (European transfers in euros) or SWIFT (other international transfers).

You can only close your account when:

• your account is not overdrawn, and
• you have no outstanding charges due on the account.

If you do have charges pending, make sure you add enough money to your account to cover them.

You also need to close any linked savings account you have to your current account, like an eSavings account.

If you are closing a credit card account make sure you are the account holder (not an additional card holder), have your credit card number with you, and that your account balance is £0.

After you’ve told us you want to close your credit card, cut up and safely dispose of your card.
