What is the Homes for Ukraine scheme?

The Homes for Ukraine scheme was launched by the UK government on 18 March 2022. It was created to allow individuals and organisations in the UK (‘sponsors’) to open their homes to Ukrainians fleeing their homeland, and their immediate families.

In return for providing accommodation, the government will pay sponsors £350 a month as a thank you.

If you have a Nationwide mortgage

I have a mortgage with you. Do I need to tell you if I’m a sponsor?

You don’t need to tell us if you're providing a room(s) in your own home or a whole property that you own.

But if you’re providing a whole property you’ll need a tenancy agreement.

For help with creating a tenancy agreement, see the government’s tenancy agreement guide (opens in a new window).

You should speak to us before becoming a sponsor if you're unable to make your monthly mortgage payments or if you've already missed one or more payments. Call us on 0800 464 30 30 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Closed Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays) to discuss your options.

Will being a sponsor mean any fees or changes to my mortgage?

No. If you’re taking part in this scheme, we will not charge any fees or move you to a higher interest rate.

If you have Nationwide Home Insurance

I have a home insurance policy with you. Do I need to tell you if I’m a sponsor?

Before 1st April 2025, you don’t need to update your policy to tell us you have refugees living there.

For renewals or new business after 1st April 2025 either:

  • Contact Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Ltd (RSA) before becoming a sponsor
  • Tell RSA that refugees are already living with you at your next renewal

In all cases, check that your level of cover is enough to protect any of the refugees’ possessions or valuables as well as your own. Your Policy Schedule in your policy documents has all your current cover and limits.

If you would like to amend your policy, you should contact RSA. You can do this online or over the phone by calling 0800 145 6060. Lines are open 8am to 9pm Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm on Saturdays, and 10am to 5pm on Sundays.

Will being a sponsor mean any fees or changes to my cover?

Your cover won’t be affected. We treat all refugees as family members on your policy, so they’ll get the full benefits of your cover.

But we suggest just checking your level of cover is enough to protect your guests’ possessions as well as your own. And if they have any valuables with them, you might want to add those to your policy as well.

If you’re not sure if your cover is enough, or if you need to make any changes, contact us.

How do I sign up to be a sponsor?

You can read more about the scheme and register your interest in being a sponsor on the UK government’s Homes for Ukraine site.
