Helping young people rebuild their lives

Every four minutes, a young person aged 16 - 24 faces homelessness in the UK because they have been let down by the people and the systems that are supposed to care for them.

Centrepoint delivers a range of tailored, long-term support programmes to young people facing homelessness. These include initiatives to prevent young people becoming homeless in the first place and help for those in crisis.

Andrew shares his story in this video.

1
00:00:15.560 --> 00:00:16.960
Before I was at Centrepoint’s

2
00:00:16.960 --> 00:00:18.080
Independent Living Programme

3
00:00:18.080 --> 00:00:19.200
I was in supported housing,

4
00:00:19.200 --> 00:00:22.200
where I had a lease, and that was ending.

5
00:00:22.200 --> 00:00:24.120
I had to find other accommodation.

6
00:00:24.120 --> 00:00:26.600
My housing benefit entitlement wasn’t enough

7
00:00:26.600 --> 00:00:28.800
to help me pay the rent.

8
00:00:28.800 --> 00:00:29.720
It was a tough time because

9
00:00:29.720 --> 00:00:31.200
it was either my apprenticeship,

10
00:00:31.200 --> 00:00:34.840
or cancelling it and basically being on Universal Credit.

11
00:00:35.360 --> 00:00:36.840
It even affected my standard of living,

12
00:00:36.840 --> 00:00:38.120
I wasn’t eating as much,

13
00:00:38.120 --> 00:00:41.120
Because 70%, 80% of my wages was rent.

14
00:00:41.680 --> 00:00:44.480
Because me working and doing my apprenticeship,

15
00:00:44.480 --> 00:00:46.080
I was in a worse position than

16
00:00:46.080 --> 00:00:48.160
my peers that were doing nothing.

17
00:00:48.160 --> 00:00:50.840
And it’s like, you’re trapped.

18
00:00:54.800 --> 00:00:57.080
My key worker found Centrepoint,

19
00:00:57.080 --> 00:00:59.680
and I went through a series of questions…

20
00:00:59.680 --> 00:01:02.080
About my apprenticeship, about myself.

21
00:01:02.080 --> 00:01:03.880
And yeah, a couple of weeks later

22
00:01:03.880 --> 00:01:05.720
I found myself at Reuben House.

23
00:01:06.120 --> 00:01:08.720
It did feel like a relief because it really helped me.

24
00:01:08.720 --> 00:01:10.280
Rent at Centrepoint’s Independent Living

25
00:01:10.280 --> 00:01:12.600
was capped at one third of my wages,

26
00:01:12.600 --> 00:01:15.120
so that I was actually able to do stuff

27
00:01:15.120 --> 00:01:17.000
that some of my peers were doing already.

28
00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:20.280
It also made me know that my work wasn’t going in vain.

29
00:01:21.160 --> 00:01:25.000
I was actually working and enjoying the fruits of my labour,

30
00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:27.040
whilst also knowing that I was going to get a career

31
00:01:27.040 --> 00:01:28.080
out of my apprenticeship.

32
00:01:28.520 --> 00:01:29.920
There’s a community here

33
00:01:29.920 --> 00:01:32.880
where you’re around other young people.

34
00:01:32.880 --> 00:01:37.080
All similar stories, but you’re unique in your own way.

35
00:01:37.640 --> 00:01:39.800
And you just make friends amongst

36
00:01:39.800 --> 00:01:42.680
your differences but similarities,

37
00:01:42.680 --> 00:01:44.720
and I think that was special.

38
00:01:45.080 --> 00:01:48.720
One of my biggest accountability partners is my late father.

39
00:01:49.240 --> 00:01:52.240
Everything I do in life is to try and make him proud.

40
00:01:52.840 --> 00:01:55.080
I am now in my own property,

41
00:01:55.080 --> 00:01:58.280
where I’m safe, secure and grateful.

42
00:02:07.160 --> 00:02:08.560
I don’t know what the future holds,

43
00:02:08.560 --> 00:02:11.200
But the future’s looking bright.

“Last year, almost 136,000 young people faced homelessness – a record high number that sadly is only increasing. This is not acceptable and that is why we want to end youth homelessness now and for the next generation of young people.”

Seyi Obakin, Chief Executive Officer at Centrepoint

Funding Centrepoint programmes

Nationwide Fairer Futures will help to fund Centrepoint’s life changing programmes - ‘More than a roof’ and ‘Stepping stone homes’. These programmes help young people have a home of their own where they can look forward to a brighter and more independent future.

Stepping stone homes

Stepping stone homes is a ground-breaking independent living programme to fund truly affordable new homes for young people who have faced homelessness. This ambitious scheme sees Centrepoint build homes for young people to live in independently for 3-5 years. Residents pay rent capped at a third of their income, so they can afford to make ends meet and save for the future, to break the cycle of homelessness.

More than a roof

More than a roof is about refurbishing homes and creating safe spaces for homeless young people so they can be themselves and rebuild their lives. It does this in three different ways:

  • Refurbishing homes owned by Centrepoint.
  • A grant programme empowering Centrepoint's national network of smaller youth homelessness charities to upgrade their spaces.
  • The 'Style my space initiative’ which gives young people the funds to personalise their space and make their home their own.

Making renting work

Making renting work funds deposits for homeless young people who are ready to leave supported homes and move into the private rental sector. It helps them find the right accommodation, so they can overcome the barriers to living independently and secure a space to call home.

Nationwide Fairer Futures and Centrepoint - working together to make a difference

We've chosen Centrepoint as our charity partner because every 4 minutes, a young person aged 16 - 24 becomes homeless. Centrepoint delivers the most comprehensive range of tailored, long-term support programmes to young people facing homelessness. These include initiatives to prevent young people becoming homeless in the first place and help for those in crisis.

Our Nationwide Fairer Futures aim

2,800 homeless young people will be supported to take steps towards independence and a home of their own. Our aim is to enable them to have a home where they feel safe, where they belong and where they can rebuild their lives.

Nationwide Fairer Futures charity partners

Our charity partners also include Action for Children and Dementia UK.

Working with our charity partners, we are helping to tackle some of the biggest issues we see in society today. We will make a difference to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.

Action for Children - helping families living in poverty

30% of children in the UK are living in poverty.

Action for Children helps families through crisis, and fights for an end to child poverty and hardship.

Dementia UK - helping those with dementia

1 in 2 people will be affected by dementia in their lifetime.

Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nursing charity. Its specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide free, tailored advice and support to help families care for their loved one and ensure no one faces dementia alone.
