Change your details

There are many different reasons you might want to change the name, title or gender on your bank accounts, including getting married or updating your title to reflect your professional status (for example, Dr).

If you’ve changed your name, title or gender, you can let us know either by visiting us in branch or writing to us.

Change your name

To change your name in branch, take proof of your name change into one of our branches and a member of our staff will update your details.

Find your nearest branch

You can also download and complete our change of name form. You'll then need to post this – along with proof of your name change – to us at:

Nationwide Building Society
SN38 1NW

We'll need an original or certified copy of any of the documents from this list:

  • marriage certificate
  • civil partnership certificate
  • decree absolute or dissolution order
  • enrolled deed poll
  • unenrolled deed poll plus one item of original Name ID in your new name (photocard driving licence, passport or EA Identity Card)
  • statutory declaration
  • court order
  • adoption certificate
  • birth certificate

Unfortunately, we cannot accept photocopies.

We'll return passports and photocard driving licences or ID cards using registered post. All other original documents will be returned using the standard UK mail service.

Please note: we may still need to contact you if you tell us about your name change by post.

Change or remove your title

To change or remove the title on your account, you can let us know in branch or by post – we don’t need any proof of ID. If you would prefer to post it to us, please complete a change of name form and post it to us at:

Nationwide Building Society
SN38 1NW

We’ll reissue your card and/or chequebook as per your new title request.

Unfortunately, not all accounts can currently be opened with a gender-neutral title, like Mx. But if you’ve opened an account with us, you can then change your title to Mx by either coming into branch or following the steps for changing your title by post. As we’re still updating our systems, your title may also go back to its previous setting after you change it. If this happens, you’ll need to come back into branch and request the change of title again or post us another change of name form.

It’s important we give our members the right to have their Nationwide services reflect who they are and how they identify. That’s why we’re working hard on expanding the options available to our members in the future.

Change your gender

To change your gender, you can either come into branch or write to us at:

Nationwide Building Society
SN38 1NW

We don’t need any proof of gender change to update your records.

If you have an insurance or investment product through Nationwide

You’ll need to contact your policy provider directly to tell them about your change of name.

Our list of insurance and investment providers will help you find the contact information you need.

Change of name for a business, club, charity or society

You must come into branch to update the name of your business, club, charity or society. We must see the originals of the following supporting documents – we can’t accept photocopies or certified copies.

Clubs and societies

  • The club or society constitution and/or rules, or
  • a letterhead confirming the club or society name, or
  • a letter confirming purpose of the club or society.

Registered charities

  • The official document from the Charity Commission quoting the registered charity number.
  • If the charity is a limited company, we also need the Certificate of Incorporation.

  • The Companies House document.
